Understanding Development
One of the most common questions parents ask is:
“Is my child developing as expected?”
Every child develops at their own pace. Development is not a race and children do not all follow exactly the same timeline. However, understanding how development typically unfolds can help families recognize strengths, identify challenges, and know when additional support may be helpful.
What is development?
Movement Development
Skills such as rolling, sitting, crawling, walking, running, climbing, balance, and coordination.
Communication Development
Understanding language, expressing needs, and interacting with others.
Social Development
Building relationships, sharing attention, playing with others, and participating in everyday life.
Everyday Independence
Eating, dressing, toileting, following routines, and managing daily activities.
When should I be concerned?
It can be helpful to seek professional advice if:
- Your child loses skills they previously had.
- Your child consistently struggles to participate in everyday activities.
- You notice differences that continue over time.
- Your intuition tells you something does not feel right.
- Teachers or caregivers share similar concerns.
Seeking guidance does not automatically mean something is wrong. Often, it simply provides clarity and helps families make informed decisions.
The Soul Movers Perspective
Development is not just about milestones.
What matters most is participation.
Can your child join family activities? Play with friends? Participate at school? Explore their world with confidence?
Our focus is helping children participate more fully in everyday life.
