Sensory Processing
Sensory processing is the way the brain organises and responds to information from the senses — touch, sound, sight, movement, taste, smell, and the less familiar senses of body position and internal signals. Everyone processes sensory information differently, and those differences are usually invisible to others — which is part of why sensory processing challenges are so often misread as something else.
When sensory processing is significantly different from typical, it can shape participation in daily life in ways that are hard to explain without the right framework. The child who melts down at mealtimes, the teenager who cannot tolerate crowded corridors at school, the adult who is exhausted by open-plan offices — understanding sensory processing offers a more useful explanation of these experiences than “sensitivity” or “behaviour problems.”
Where Sensory Processing Shows Up in Daily Life
Sensory processing differences are not abstract — they show up in specific, concrete moments of daily life that families and clinicians can identify, understand, and respond to.
School and Learning Environments
Classrooms are sensory environments: fluorescent lighting, background noise from 25 other children, physical proximity, the smell of food from the canteen, the texture of a chair that has to be sat in for 45 minutes. For a child whose nervous system processes sensory input with high sensitivity, a standard classroom can be genuinely exhausting in ways that have nothing to do with their cognitive capacity. Understanding this helps explain behaviour that can otherwise be misread as defiance, inattention, or emotional dysregulation.
Mealtimes
Food refusal, gagging on specific textures, insistence on only a narrow range of foods, distress at smells — sensory differences explain many of the feeding and eating challenges that families navigate. The child who cannot tolerate mixed textures or wet foods is not being difficult; their nervous system is registering those sensory properties as genuinely aversive. This is one of the areas where early occupational therapy can make a significant practical difference to family wellbeing.
Getting Dressed and Personal Care
Clothing tags, seam lines, sock textures, the feeling of water during bathing, the sensation of toothbrushing — personal care routines are sensory-intensive, and for a child with tactile hypersensitivity, the morning routine can be a daily ordeal. Strategies that modify the sensory input — seamless clothing, specific fabric choices, graded toothbrushing programmes — can transform a conflict-filled morning into a manageable one.
Social Situations and Public Places
Busy playgrounds, shopping centres, birthday parties, sports events — environments with high levels of noise, movement, and unpredictable sensory input can be genuinely overwhelming for children and adults with sensory processing differences. The person who avoids these situations is not being antisocial; they are managing a real sensory experience. Understanding this redirects the response from persuasion toward problem-solving: what modifications to the environment or the approach would make participation possible?
Understanding the Sensory Systems
Most people know the five senses. But the sensory systems that most commonly create daily life challenges are the three that are less familiar — and understanding them changes how behaviour is interpreted.
Proprioception — The Hidden Sense
Proprioception is the body's sense of its own position and movement — delivered by sensors in muscles, joints, and tendons. Children who seek heavy work — who crash into furniture, hang off things, push and pull — are often seeking proprioceptive input, which tends to be organising and calming for the nervous system. Understanding this converts a behaviour that appears disruptive into a communication: this child is seeking the sensory input their nervous system needs.
The Vestibular System
The vestibular system — located in the inner ear — detects movement, gravity, and head position. It is deeply connected to attention, postural control, and emotional regulation. Children who are hypersensitive to vestibular input may be distressed by swings, escalators, or sudden movements. Children who seek vestibular input may spin, swing, or rock in ways that can appear self-stimulatory. Both are expressions of a nervous system trying to manage its sensory experience.
Interoception — The Internal Sense
Interoception is awareness of internal body signals: hunger, thirst, the need to toilet, emotional states, pain, temperature. Difficulties with interoception can mean a child does not reliably notice hunger until they are very hungry, does not receive clear toilet urgency signals, or has difficulty identifying and naming their emotional states. This is less commonly discussed than tactile or vestibular processing, but its impact on daily life and emotional regulation is substantial.
Sensory Seeking vs Sensory Avoiding
People with sensory processing differences tend to respond to sensory input in one of two broad patterns: seeking more of certain sensory inputs, or avoiding them. Both can present as challenging behaviour if the underlying sensory explanation is not understood. A sensory-informed approach asks: what sensory experience is this behaviour serving? That question usually leads to a more effective response than asking: how do we stop this behaviour?
Supporting Participation Through Sensory Understanding
Sensory-informed support is fundamentally about problem-solving: understanding what sensory experience a person is having, what they need to be able to participate in a given context, and what modifications — to the environment, the activity, or the approach — would close that gap.
Environmental Modification
Many sensory challenges can be significantly reduced by modifying the environment rather than the person. Reducing fluorescent lighting. Providing ear protection in high-noise settings. Creating a quiet space in a classroom. Using visual schedules to reduce uncertainty. Allowing flexible seating. These modifications are often low-cost, quickly implemented, and immediately effective — and they change participation outcomes without requiring any change in the person's sensory processing capacity.
Sensory Diets
An occupational therapist may recommend a “sensory diet” — a personalised plan of sensory activities structured throughout the day to help regulate the nervous system. This is not a literal food diet; it is a schedule of sensory experiences (heavy work, movement breaks, calm spaces, tactile activities) that help the nervous system maintain an optimal state for participation. The activities in a sensory diet are based on the specific sensory profile of the individual, not a generic programme.
Graded Exposure
Gradual, supported exposure to sensory experiences that are avoided — at an appropriate pace and with appropriate support — can expand a person's sensory tolerance over time. This is not the same as forcing exposure to distressing sensory situations, which produces the opposite effect. Graded exposure is carefully planned, individually calibrated, and responsive to how the person is managing at each stage.
Informing the People Around the Child
One of the most effective sensory processing interventions is education — helping teachers, family members, support workers, and peers understand why certain environments or activities are difficult, and what they can do to help. A teacher who understands why a child needs to sit away from the hallway door is a more effective support than a teacher who interprets the same preference as avoidance or manipulation.
